US gal moving to Sydney shortly, seeks advice

Hey all!!!

I'm a super friendly, hard working, outgoing, fabulously rad California born and raised burner who will be moving down under in a matter of weeks (October 31, 2007 to be exact)!!! I have a four month work visa which I plan on extending as a tourist visa (putting me in Australia through late May '08). Though I'll be traversing your lovely land solo, I plan on living and working in Sydney for the first little bit. I'd love to wait tables (I'll be getting an RSA license shortly after I land and have over two years of of cocktail waitressing, busy bar experience)d and sublease a room (perhaps from someone whose going away for a bit?). I also have teaching/tutoring experience and a BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz in both Film and Digital Media and Modern Literature. Most importantly, I'm a quick learner and a hard worker with a very positive attitude who loves the challenge and dedication required when dealing with new experiences.

Ideally, I want to live/work in the Darlinghurst area but I'm open to all possibilities. If you all have any advice, tips, or tricks I'd love to hear them all. Where can a burner get their dancing, arty, costumed rocks off in Sydney (or beyond)? Know of any good restaurants or bars I should check out? Is there a street, scene, theater, club, WHATEVER, that I should check out while there? You know: something one would NEVER hope to read about in a tourist book. What are your faves?

Also of importance, if you know of anyone looking to lease their space or hire a hard worker with a big smile and a great heart send them my way!!! I have a very professional CV as well which I'm more than willing to email to any prospective parties. Shoot me a message and I'll shoot you an email.

Good Weekend's Away in the City - Suggestions??

I'm trying to set up a weekend in the city for my sister & her husband to reconnect their lives and libido's and am calling for recommendations of hotels/B&Bs/etc. They will be dropping the kid's off & picking them up from mine which is in Rushcutter's Bay (King's X really) so ideally somewhere within Eastern Sydney or CBD would be great......really anywhere short of crossing the bridge is ideal. Beginning in March next year, we are inviting 9 people to cruise from Bodrum, Turkey along the Turkish coast, Cyprus, Athens, Alexandria on a share expenses basis (very, very inexpensive). We began a documentary in Paris and Turkey last year, and now as it gets warmer in Turkey we are going to complete it. We have a US distributor, and everyone involved will share in profits. It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months. Email me for details.

Sydney events in november

Hey all,

It's lloking like I'm going to be in Sydney for a week and a half on either the 14th or the 21st of November. Are there any events going on that are worth checking out?

Also, is there anything in particular that I shouldn't miss while I'm there. I mean besides the bridge, opera house and all the obvious tourist things. I'll have a car while I'm there so getting around won't be a hurdle.

Tribal Assault: Surry Hills (Community Service Announcement)

Hi folks

not a cheery posting I'm sorry!

Last Sunday evening (7 December 2003) @ approx 8.45pm, I was threatened, assaulted and robbed on Marlborough Street, Surry Hills by five indigenous youths.

I got ruffed up, my clothes were ruined, they stole my mobile and scared me shitless!

Marlborough Street runs adjacent to Ward Park - a pretty dodgy park at the best of time (the park is situated at the termination of Riley Street - where it meets Devonshire Street) Surry Hills

There is a lot of State/government funded housing in this area and a highrise adjacent to the park (Northcott Building) has the single highest rate of MURDERS for any one address in Australia.

I never walk though the park - even during daylight hours... but it seems that sticking to the well lit streets isn't the answer either.

For any people living/working/passing though this neighbourhood - PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

(Tragically, the police who investigated my attack told me that any resident living in Surry Hills or Redfern was asking for this sort of thing!!!! I thanked them for instilling confidence in their work!)

Please pass the word that this area is NOT SAFE for any one!

I just moved to Sydney and don't know much yet :)
Would there be a club out here that plays middle eastern music, banghra (indian pop like Panjabi MC) or such ? DJs are ok and places without salsa would be a plus !

Hello all,

So it looks like I am going to move to Sydney, starting working on Sept. 1st.
The company is located in Paddington in the Fox Studios.

As I don't know anything about this city, I wanted to know what are the nice neighbourhoods to live in ? I like more populars area, with restaurant and cafes/bars, yet safe.

Also, is there a website people use to find appartments, sell/buy things ? Like we have craigslist.com here in San Francisco.

considering moving to Sydney

Hello All !

I just got a job offer to work at Animal Logic, it's Computer Graphics company located in Sydney. The contrat would be for over a year. I'm French but I've been living in San Francisco, California for the last 9 years.

I'm posting here to try to gather some feedback from both natives and foreigners who have moved there. Infos on the city itself, the people, museums, theater, opera, cultural life in general, outdoor life, restaurants, clubs, bar, coffeshops, markets, or whatever makes you love this city.

this Fall, what are the cheaper area's to stay. I would prefer something in the City, but not to touristy or Red Light Discricty. Something peaceful and quiet and close to city transportation, A hostel may be an option if it's not it to much of a party area. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Twilight Film Series on the Harbor

Light Show - now on

Was wandering throught the citay on Sat night looking at the lit up building etc. Ended up down near the Opera House and was taking some video of the bridge lights, when I realised that the music from the Opera Bar (on the concourse) was synched to the bridge lights! Apparently they do it at 9,10 & 11pm. It's quite cool to watch with the music going. I haven't seen this advertised and it seems a pity that such a small audience gets the full effect... Anyhoo that's my Festival of Sydney 2 cents worth...
